My paintings are inspired by the grandeur of the natural world. Subjects often feature a water element, as I seek it's abstract qualities of light, reflection and distortion in my work. Canadian waters provide such a beautiful, marvelous resource for my observations. Hiking the Bruce Trail, wilderness canoeing, camping, or even a walk along the Etobicoke Creek near my studio provides abundant references. It is through my close examination of the earth's marvels; the intricate design, pattern, endless colour combinations, majesty and beauty, that I am inspired to interpret and share these through my work.
I paint mainly in the transparent water colour medium, and larger works in oils. There is a great sensory drawing and painting approach to water colour which allows me to capture the effects of luminosity, almost like painting with light. Recently introduced in my work are beautiful hand-made papers from La Papeterie Saint-Armand, Montreal, imparting unique surface textures and deckles.
I'm an elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour since 2004 and a Signature Member of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America since 2021.
I have studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design University in the continuing studies program with a focus on drawing and painting. These skills have come naturally to me from an early age, however I greatly value the direction received from my art and architecture teachers. Conducting my own painting workshops brings a newfound respect for them.
